Located in one of the historic buffalo soldiers barracks buildings in the Presidio, this Pilates and yoga studio was designed to reflect the natural serenity of its park setting. Incorporating elements of the original historic structure as well as modern, ecologically friendly materials, this project met the requirements of both the Presidio Trust’s Historic Review Board, and their strict environmental guidelines.
These existing interior windows had been covered with sheetrock by the army years ago, and as part of the renovation of this historic property, we found and restored them to their original condition. Their overscaled yet graceful proportions inspired the new interior windows that we inserted into the new reception and administrative spaces.
Walls were removed or opened up to provide large studio spaces with natural or borrowed light from all sides. Soft colors, natural wood counters (from salvaged sources) and carpet made from recycled content rounded out the interior finishes.
Where possible, existing interior finishes were refurbished and painted to keep the original character of the building intact. Ceilings were lifted and illuminated to provide generous proportioned spaces.
Bamboo floors instill a sense of quiet in this yoga studio.
