This handsome building is listed as one of Oakland's historical resources, however, it had suffered "modernization" in the late 1960's on the street level with a poorly executed and nearly windowless façade. The building owner received a partial grant as part of an overall Downtown facade-improvement redevelopment effort on the part of the City of Oakland.
The new design, an extensive facade and entry remodel, recaptures the elegant spirit of the original building. Decorative ironwork gates remain open against the pilasters during the day - in the evenings these are locked to provide security for the building and occupants; custom ironwork awnings demark the entrances to the restaurant and office lobby; Integrally-colored plaster finishes reference the limestone trim color of the original building (still unchanged on the upper levels); new planters and hanging baskets are exterior elements that add additional character and detail to the remodeled façade; new lighting enhances the restaurant signage, the entrances and sidewalk; the office lobby finishes were completely upgraded to stone with handsome wood detailing.
