17th Avenue Residence

Located in San Francisco, this home had been neglected for decades when our clients bought it. Architectural improvements, in addition to structural, electrical and plumbing upgrades, were required to make this home meet the needs of this young family. At the lowest floor level, a painting studio was built under the existing second floor at the rear of the house. A Connecticut bluestone terrace with a built-in barbecue was constructed to extend the sense of space out into the garden. A small tiled roof deck was built over the studio, the deck connecting directly to both the dining room and the sun room on the main floor of the house.
At the main floor level, the kitchen was gutted and renovated to be more open to the adjacent dining room and sun room. An all stainless steel kitchen was custom fabricated, including a "quilted" steel backsplash at the range, and a glass front pantry.
The stainless steel cabinetry was set against a rich, integrally colored plaster wall, over a wood floor with contrasting inlays. Each element of the composition is warmed and complemented by the others.
On the third level, the floor plan was reconfigured in order to fit two bathrooms in where only one bathroom had served the whole house. A master bath was designed contrasting modern elements with a more period backdrop. A custom cast concrete tub surround was fabricated to match the concrete tiles and pan in the shower. These pieces were paired with painted beadboard walls, douglas fir floors and traditional fixtures. A skylight was cut in to brighten a room that only had one window onto a narrow lightwell.
A second bathroom was added for the children. The same concrete floor tiles were used here, complementing the softly colored brick tiles and traditional fixtures.
