This project involved creating a completely new kitchen as the heart of the home, reconfiguring patterns of spatial flow from other rooms and the outdoors. The range, as the focus of the kitchen, was placed so the chef could look out and talk to others in the kitchen. In small gatherings, friends pull up around the island; large parties congregate and watch the action. The elliptical copper hood was custom designed to be the "crown" and focus of the kitchen. Varying finish material and woods were used to give distinction to the different work areas and to bring intimacy and warmth to a large area. The cabinetry against the stairs conceals the entertainment center and wraps the new staircase creating sculptural interest.
