Cordilleras

This project took over the footprint of an existing ranch style house, retooled the idea of a contemporary ranch and expanded it to take the most advantage of their beautiful outdoor spaces and mild climate.

There are a variety of spaces that this family of four uses for entertaining large gatherings, smaller family affairs and quiet intimate activities. Different rooms have varying ceiling heights and volumetric shapes; rooms and spaces connect to one another with deliberate visual axes and framed views; color palettes for each room relate to one another but are each distinct; exterior spaces are shaped to feel like rooms; interior spaces see and connect to the exterior; circulation was designed for good flow and loop. All this to create visual interest and quality of space that would underwrite the way this family with young children wanted to live; open, friendly, social, vital; active; restful.

The City’s Design Guidelines required a traditional vernacular with the exterior architecture styling but within this framework we were still able to create a warm, tactile modern plan that worked with their contemporary lifestyle.
