West Berkeley Residence

When the owners of this Berkeley bungalow contacted Mitchell and Riera Architects, they had already put in a beautiful garden, and now were ready to expand and update their single story home. At the top of their wish list was a new master bedroom and bath. We designed a second floor addition which would provide a peaceful and light-filled bedroom, a large walk-in closet and a gracious bath.
The master bath included a palette of soft natural colors put together with two varieties of stone, custom built cherry wood cabinets and trim, and bamboo floors. Clerestory windows wash the ceiling with northern light, while providing privacy.
A new stair spills down from the second floor into the new dining area on the first floor. The first floor plan was reconfigured to take advantage of the views over the back garden. The dining area and kitchen were turned 90 degrees so that they would take up the full width of the house at the rear. This allowed us to add windows and bring light in from three sides of the kitchen/dining areas. Mahogany consoles and detailing at the stair matches the mahogany cabinetry detail in the kitchen.
In the kitchen, glass fronted upper cabinets were installed in front of fixed sandblasted glass windows to bring in natural light while still addressing practical needs. Overscaled doors and windows were installed to overlook the small rear deck and garden.
